Skiathos is part of the Sporades island located near the town of Volos in Central Greece. Skiathos island is famous for its lush vegetation and beautiful beaches. It is also known for the film Mamma Mia. Some scenes were shot in Skiathos although the majority of the scenes were shot on the nearby island ofย Skopelos.
Skiathos is easily accessible from the port of Volos ( 2h 30m by regular boat) and has its own airport with connections from Athens and other cities around the world.
This summer I spent my holidays in the area of Pelion in Greece. While there I decided to make a day trip to the island of Skiathos. Unfortunately, I didn’t have more time available for a longer stay.
The boat arrives at Skiathos town, a very picturesque place with amphitheatrically built houses and cobbled streets.
There are a lot of things one can do in Skiathos town:
- There is a variety of restaurants and bars. Skiathos is well-known for its nightlife after all.
- You can climb to Agios Nikolaos Church and Clock Tower and admire the view of Skiathos town, the old and new port.
- Visit Bourtzi, a small peninsula that separates the port of Skiathos in two, that used to be a fortress. Now it’s a beautiful place full of pine trees where you will find an old school that has been turned into a cultural centre. It now hosts a lot of events. There is also the church of Agios Georgios on site as well as a municipal cafe with incredible views.
- Visit Alexandros Papadiamantis house. He is a very well-known Greek author that his house has been turned into a museum.
After spending some time in the town of Skiathos it was time to hit the beach.ย From the old port, there are a few excursion boats that can take you to the small island of Tsougrias. Tsougrias is located only 3 miles away from Skiathos and it’s an island full of pine trees and incredible beaches.
There are also some boats that make an excursion around the island and visit the famous Lalaria beach that is only accessible by boat when weather permits. Unfortunately that day the wind prevented the excursion.
We then decided to visit one of the most famous beaches of the island Koukounaries beach. It is actually very easy to get around the island. There is a bus service that stops at all the beaches and villages along the way and the stops are numbered.
Koukounaries beach was the last stop of the route. Koukounaries is a very long beach with white sand and crystal clear blue waters. The beach is organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, various watersports, and beach bars. On-site there is a protected pine tree forest and biotope with many species of plants and birds. The beach is incredible but too crowded for my taste.
On the way to Koukounaries I spotted some incredible beaches along the way that I am planning to visit the next time I will be to the island.
Overall Skiathos is a very beautiful island that I would love to spend more days on my next visit.
Have you ever been to Skiathos or any other of the Sporades islands?
