Imagine a historic mansion away from the clamour of cities and the hustle and bustle of popular locations. If you seek more of a retreat-like destination to harbour your romance, then Monemvasia is the final contender on our list of romantic places in Greece.
A hidden gem compared to the previous more high profile destinations, Monemvasia is a place that will take you back to Greece’s grander, more recent history, to Byzantine buildings and fortified towns. Being in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese, Monemvasia is a location of staggering charm.
Walking around its alleys reveal houses that tell a story, considering it was a destination that had seen a fair amount of raids in ancient times and numerous sieges during the Byzantine era and beyond. The remnants of this tumultuous history are laid to rest in stone, evoking feelings of wonderment.

Symi is a quiet elegant island with numerous small beaches that are perfect for two. Its main harbour is overlooked by colourful neoclassical mansions scattered on the hillside and its fun to walk along the waterfront to buy a natural sea sponge or to relax with a coffee. There are small tavernas serving island specialities and it is quirkily romantic to sit at a table for two with your feet in the seawater. Symi is relaxed and untouristy and the perfect place to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Zagorohoria
This beautiful region lies in the Pindus Mountains in Epirus, in north-western Greece and is the perfect choice if you both love being in the great outdoors and trying your hand at various activities. There are great geological features such as the Vikos Gorge to discover, 46 traditional villages including Papingo, with its fascinating architecture and even an ostrich farm at Kato Pedina. There are wide open spaces for just the two of you as well as eco-tours and a variety of exhilarating water sports.

Milos
Milos is the most south-westernmost volcanic Cycladic island with a large harbour and picture-postcard villages. The island has remote beaches along its southern coast which are perfect for romantic times together and Sarakiniko is a white volcanic rock moonscape with a gorgeous narrow inlet of water for swimming. There are numerous places of interest too. The ‘must-do’ for lovers is to climb the hill behind Plaka in the evening, follow the path to the two churches and stand at the highest point to watch the sunset together – magical.

Nafplio
The Peloponnese port of Nafplio is said to be one of the romantic destinations in Greece. It was once the capital of modern-day Greece. The old town is a maze of pretty narrow streets and neoclassical mansions and is totally enchanting. There are beaches and secluded coves – including Kastraki, the lovely fortress of Bourtzi, open-air concerts and romantic tavernas. As the sun begins to set, hold each other close and take a stroll along the promenade- it’s what dreams are made of.

Pelion Villages
The villages of Mt Pelion are lovely to visit all year round and after a day exploring, a romantic time together on the beach is only 20 minutes away. In the winter, the snow falls in this area and there is a ski centre at Hania, but during the rest of the year, there are hiking trails to share, streams, waterfalls and forests to explore together and in the evening, wine, tsipouro and delicious local dishes to enjoy.
